Business Facts at a glance

  • More high paying entry-level jobs are becoming available to college graduates with business degrees.
  • Schools are offering more diverse business degrees that apply to a wide range of careers.

Statistics indicate that business related jobs are among the highest average paying jobs in the United States.  Job growth in the business sector is also projected to be high over the next 8 years.

A History of Entrepreneurship in the United States

Cornelius Vanderbilt started out as a farm boy on the north shore of Staten Island, and became the owner of an empire of steamships and the illustrious New York Central railroad.  He was also one of the first men to realistically envision the creation of the Panama Canal. “The Commodore”  is famous for saying things like; “I have been insane on the subject of moneymaking all my life.” And, “If I had learned education I would not have had time to learn anything else.” And lastly, the infamous: “You have undertaken to cheat me. I won't sue you, for the law is too slow. I will ruin you.”

Perhaps modern icons like Bill Gates do more to captivate the imagination.  Bill Gates started what is known as Microsoft around 1974 while at Harvard.  He started out by developing a version of the programming language BASIC.  In addition to creating a product that everyone on the planet is aware of, Gates has written two books that received critical acclaim, and perhaps most notably, founded one of the largest philanthropic organizations in the world.

Donald Trump started out with more money than the aforementioned, and he put it to good use developing prime real estate in Manhattan.  Apart from the real estate empire, and his public affairs with many different women, he has gained notoriety from his reality T.V show “The Apprentice”, his patented hair style, and his famous catch phrase “You’re fired.”

Hot Careers In Business reported that the “Sunbelt” in the United States will be home to the most new jobs in the next ten years.  In another study, the same website maintains that 5 out of the top 10 highest paying jobs in the US are in administrative positions associated with Business, such as—chief executives, sales managers, financial services sales agents, financial managers and financial advisors.

Other sources such as the BLS indicate that 4 out of the top 10 fastest growing jobs in the United States are Administrative or Business related positions.
