A History of Entrepreneurship in the United States

Cornelius Vanderbilt started out as a farm boy on the north shore of Staten Island, and became the owner of an empire of steamships and the illustrious New York Central railroad.  He was also one of the first men to realistically envision the creation of the Panama Canal. “The Commodore”  is famous for saying things like; “I have been insane on the subject of moneymaking all my life.” And, “If I had learned education I would not have had time to learn anything else.” And lastly, the infamous: “You have undertaken to cheat me. I won't sue you, for the law is too slow. I will ruin you.”

Perhaps modern icons like Bill Gates do more to captivate the imagination.  Bill Gates started what is known as Microsoft around 1974 while at Harvard.  He started out by developing a version of the programming language BASIC.  In addition to creating a product that everyone on the planet is aware of, Gates has written two books that received critical acclaim, and perhaps most notably, founded one of the largest philanthropic organizations in the world.

Donald Trump started out with more money than the aforementioned, and he put it to good use developing prime real estate in Manhattan.  Apart from the real estate empire, and his public affairs with many different women, he has gained notoriety from his reality T.V show “The Apprentice”, his patented hair style, and his famous catch phrase “You’re fired.”
