$1.25 Million in Scholarships for Verizon Employee Dependants and Children

The Verizon Foundation is giving away $1.25 million in college scholarships to 250 children and dependents of Verizon employees. The awardees will receive $5000 each and will be eligible to a maximum of $20,000 across the four years of college.
Since 2001, Verizon has spent about $28 million, in college scholarships for more than 1800 children of Verizon employees. This year the company will shell out 4.8 million for the education of 957 Verizon scholars, 250 freshmen, and 707 upperclassmen.
Verizon chooses its recipients from thousands of candidates on the basis of financial needs, academic achievement, and extracurricular activities.  The foundation awards the scholarships in partnership with Scholarship America, which is the nation’s largest private sector scholarship and educational support organization.
The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications, is devoted to improving literacy and education; creating awareness and preventing domestic violence. The Foundation is also a dedicated promoter of the use of technology in health-care delivery. It has donated millions to non-profit agencies in America as well as abroad and conducts one of the nation’s largest employee-volunteer programs. The foundation is donated nearly 29 million in combined contributions and its employees have dedicated almost 3 million hours of community service till date.
